Minoxidil shedding phase: how long does it last?

Quick answer

Minoxidil shedding typically starts 2-6 weeks after beginning treatment and lasts 2-8 weeks. It's a sign the drug is working -- weak hairs are being pushed out by new, stronger hairs entering the growth phase. Shedding is temporary and followed by regrowth.

Why shedding happens

Minoxidil stimulates hair follicles to transition from the resting phase (telogen) to the growth phase (anagen). When this happens, the weak, thin hairs currently in the follicle get pushed out by the new, thicker hair beginning to grow underneath.

This is called "dread shed" in hair loss communities, and it's paradoxically a positive sign. The follicles that shed are the ones responding to treatment. If nothing falls out, the drug may not be reaching the follicles effectively.

Timeline of shedding and regrowth

Weeks 1-2: treatment begins. Most people notice nothing unusual yet.

Weeks 2-6: shedding begins. You may notice increased hair on your pillow, in the shower drain, or on your comb. The amount varies dramatically between individuals -- some barely notice, others find it alarming.

Weeks 6-10: shedding peaks and begins tapering off. The worst of it is usually over by week 8.

Weeks 10-16: new growth becomes visible. Initially, hairs are fine and light (vellus). Over the following months, they thicken and darken.

Months 4-6: meaningful improvement becomes visible. Hair density increases and the scalp appears fuller.

Months 6-12: maximum benefit from the current regimen. Photos from month 1 vs month 12 typically show clear improvement.

How much shedding is normal

Normal daily hair loss is 50-100 hairs. During minoxidil shedding, this can temporarily increase to 100-200+ hairs per day. The shedding involves hair from across the scalp, including areas you might not be treating.

The shedding will not make you go bald. The hairs that fall out were already destined to fall out (they were in telogen). Minoxidil accelerated their departure. The replacement hairs growing in are healthier and stronger.

If shedding is severe (dramatically more than expected) or continues beyond 10-12 weeks, contact your prescriber. Prolonged shedding may indicate an incorrect application technique, a skin reaction, or an unrelated hair loss condition.

How to get through the shedding phase

Don't stop minoxidil because of shedding. This is the most common mistake. Stopping during the shed means you lose the weak hairs (which you were going to lose anyway) AND you don't get the benefit of the new growth. You end up worse than where you started.

Take photos on day 1 (good lighting, consistent angle) and compare monthly. Your daily mirror check is unreliable because changes are too gradual to see. Photos show the reality.

Avoid aggressive brushing or styling during the shedding phase. Be gentle with your hair. The shedding isn't caused by mechanical damage, but rough handling can worsen the appearance.

Consider starting minoxidil during a period when temporary increased shedding is least stressful for you. If you have a major event coming up, you might wait until after.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone experience minoxidil shedding?

+

Not everyone. Estimates range from 20-50% of users experiencing noticeable shedding. Some people transition smoothly without visible hair loss acceleration. The absence of shedding doesn't mean the drug isn't working -- it may mean the transition is happening more gradually.

Can minoxidil shedding happen more than once?

+

Some users report a second, milder shedding phase around months 3-4. This is less common and less intense than the initial shed. It can also occur when switching from once-daily to twice-daily application, or when adding finasteride to the regimen.

Should I use more minoxidil to speed up the shedding phase?

+

No. Using more than the recommended dose (1mL or half a capful twice daily for liquid, one application for foam) doesn't speed up regrowth and increases scalp irritation risk. Stick to the prescribed amount and let the process work on its biological timeline.
